Eric Opah: From Business and Philanthropy to Abia’s 2027 Governorship Race

By Our Correspondent

Eric Opah is the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Abia State in the 2027 election. He emerged from the party’s May 21, 2026 primary after defeating Henry Ikoh. Opah, a businessman and philanthropist with experience in shipping and logistics, is campaigning on industrialisation, job creation, infrastructure, accountability and human-capital development.

As the 2027 governorship race gathers momentum in Abia State, businessman and philanthropist, Chief Eric Opah, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), placing his business experience, philanthropy and industrialisation agenda at the centre of his campaign.

Opah secured the APC ticket at the party’s governorship primary held in Umuahia on May 21, 2026. The party’s returning officer, Barthol Nyelong, declared him the winner after he polled 125,977 votes against 5,905 votes recorded by former Minister of State for Science and Technology, Henry Ikoh.

His emergence, however, has not been without controversy. Some party members questioned the conduct of the primary and challenged the circumstances surrounding his emergence. The Abia APC leadership has since maintained that the exercise was properly conducted and that Opah remains the party’s candidate for the 2027 election.

From Business to Politics

Opah’s political journey has been preceded by a career in shipping, freight forwarding and logistics.

He began his professional career with Panalpina World Transport Group before establishing his own business interests in the logistics sector. He later became associated with Fortune Global Shipping and Logistics and other business ventures.

His professional background has shaped much of his political message. During his declaration, he presented himself as a businessman seeking to apply private-sector experience to public administration.

“My aspiration is not borne out of personal ambition. It is focused on clear agendas,” Opah said during his declaration.

He also called for greater transparency and accountability in government.

According to him, Abia requires stronger job creation, infrastructure development and economic integration across its various communities.

Industrialisation at the Centre of Opah’s Agenda

Industrialisation has emerged as one of the central themes of Opah’s 2027 campaign.

He has argued that Abia, particularly Aba, has the commercial base required to become a stronger manufacturing and investment hub.

“Aba will then transcend its reputation as a trading emporium and emerge as a manufacturing colossus,” his campaign materials state.

He has also cited international trade exhibitions such as China’s Canton Fair as a model that could be adapted to Abia to promote local products, attract investors and expand opportunities for businesses.

Opah’s wider economic agenda includes support for small and medium-sized enterprises, infrastructure development, job creation and an environment that encourages investment.

Philanthropy and Community Projects

Before entering the 2027 governorship race, Opah had established a public profile through business and philanthropic activities.

Through the Eric Opah Foundation, he has supported initiatives in healthcare, education, youth empowerment and community development.

Available profiles of his activities indicate that he has supported healthcare services and the provision of medical equipment in Mbubo, Nsulu, while also participating in community development projects.

His foundation has also been associated with scholarship programmes and educational support for students.

Opah has further backed community infrastructure projects, including facilities in Mbubo. His public profile therefore combines private-sector activity with a long-running record of community interventions.

Education and Professional Recognition

Opah holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and built his professional career around shipping and logistics.

His corporate experience includes international freight forwarding, shipping and air-cargo operations. His professional profile also identifies him as the founder and president of business and community-development organisations.

In 2023, he received an honorary doctorate in Business Administration from an American university, according to reports about his career.

His professional journey has subsequently become a major part of the argument for his candidacy, particularly his emphasis on applying business principles to government.

What Opah Says Abia Needs

At the centre of Opah’s political message is the argument that government must become more accountable, economically productive and responsive to citizens.

He has identified job creation, infrastructure, industrialisation and human-capital development as key priorities.

“We don’t have two Abias,” he said, stressing the need for greater unity across the state.

He has also promised to focus on worker and pensioner payments, reduce waste and improve accountability if elected.

Another major component of his agenda is the development of Aba as a manufacturing and commercial centre while extending infrastructure and economic opportunities to other parts of the state.

The APC Advantage

Opah has also linked his candidacy to the political advantage of having an APC-led federal government.

“Today, APC is the government at the federal level,” he said. “Abia needs that connection to develop. We are not going to be in opposition.”

The argument is that closer political alignment with the Federal Government could improve Abia’s access to federal infrastructure, investment programmes and development partnerships.

However, whether such alignment would translate into measurable economic gains remains a question that voters will assess as the 2027 election approaches.

A Contest Still Taking Shape

The emergence of Opah has added a new dimension to the political contest in Abia.

His background differs from that of many traditional political contenders. He enters the race with a profile built largely around business, philanthropy and community development.

At the same time, the controversy surrounding the APC primary means that party cohesion will remain an important factor as the election approaches.

The APC has continued to recognise Opah as its candidate, while rival political interests and some party members have raised questions about the primary process.

For Opah, the task ahead is therefore twofold: consolidate the APC structure in Abia and convince voters that his experience in business and philanthropy can translate effectively into governance.

As the 2027 election draws closer, his industrialisation, job-creation and accountability agenda will face scrutiny alongside those of other contenders.

For now, Chief Eric Opah has secured the APC ticket and positioned himself as one of the major figures in the emerging Abia governorship contest.

The coming months will determine how far his business-driven political message resonates with voters across the state.
