President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms may be causing pain and frustration for many Nigerians, but the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) says the current hardship should not be mistaken for failure.
The Guild said the administration’s tough economic policies reflect what it described as a long-term plan to rebuild Nigeria’s economy and promote sustainable national development.
In a joint statement signed by GOMEP-NG President, Comr. Akpovoke Otiti, and National Secretary, Prince Clinton Uba, the Guild urged Nigerians to remain patient and support the Federal Government’s reform agenda.
According to the Guild, major reforms often require difficult decisions and short-term sacrifices before their full benefits can be seen.
“Many Nigerians may mistake President Tinubu’s approach for weakness, but we see it differently. His willingness to take difficult decisions demonstrates a long-term vision for rebuilding the nation’s economy and strengthening governance,” Otiti said.
The GOMEP-NG president described Tinubu as a leader who is seeking to raise standards in governance and public service.
He said the administration’s focus should be viewed beyond immediate political gains, stressing that lasting reforms may require patience before their impact becomes clear.
Otiti urged Nigerians to distinguish between temporary economic discomfort and the long-term national interest.
He noted that some of the government’s policies could place additional pressure on citizens in the short term. However, he expressed optimism that the reforms would produce better results once they become fully stabilised.
GOMEP-NG Calls for More Support for Nigerians
Despite its support for the Tinubu administration’s reform agenda, GOMEP-NG called on the Federal Government to pay greater attention to the plight of ordinary Nigerians.
The Guild urged the government to strengthen social intervention programmes and ensure that the benefits of economic reforms eventually translate into better living conditions.
It also called for greater transparency and accountability across government agencies.
According to the Guild, clearer communication is needed so that Nigerians can better understand the objectives, timelines and expected outcomes of major government policies.
“Once these policies stabilise and begin to deliver the desired results, Nigerians who are currently complaining may be among those praising the President for having the courage to take difficult decisions,” Otiti added.
The Guild further reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with the Federal Government and other stakeholders.
GOMEP-NG said it would continue to support efforts aimed at promoting good governance, responsible leadership and sustainable national development.
The Guild, however, stressed that public support for economic reforms should go hand in hand with accountability, transparency and policies that protect vulnerable Nigerians from the effects of economic hardship.
