The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen George Akume has congratulated Ms Colette Mary Kosi Oko for emerging 3rd position in the essay competition organised by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
The essay competition, which is an annual event organised by the drug enforcement agency, seeks to encourage reading and writing culture among secondary school students, had contestants drawn from the 36 states of the federation including the FCT.
With the topic, “The influence of Social Media In Promoting Drug Abuse Among Young People” the event explored the potency of media contents in the agency’s war against illicit drug usage in Nigeria, given that about 90 percent of the target class are exposed to social media.”
However, among the 36 contestants, Ms Collette Kosi Mary Oko, a native of Ezi-Ajah Village, Amuro Community, Afikpo LGA, Ebonyi State, defeated others and won the trophy as the winner of the 3rd position and the first in Ebonyi State.
Speaking while conferring the award to Ms Oko, Sen. Akuma lauded the winner of the 3rd position for navigating the intellectual rigours required to convince the judges of the media potency in the war against the scourge.
He said the event would not only foster social rapports amongst various contestants, but will also enhance their writing skills, while also increasing their reading appetite.
The Secretary to the Federal Government commended the NDLEA for encouraging scholarship and literacy in the country.
While explaining the rationale for the event, Gen Umar the Chairman of NDLEA reiterated his zero tolerance to illicit drug usage in the country, stating that the need to engage the youth in the discussion will hasten the war against drug abuse.
Reacting to the award, Ms Oko appreciated her parents for creating the environment and her school that sharpened her writing skills even as she thanked the organisers for organizing events that engender reading and writing culture.
