Do Not Adopt Conventional Election Method… Bright Chimezie To Imo NAWOJ

As the 202 National Association of Women Journalists, (NAWOJ) election, Imo state Chapter crawls in, Executive Officer of Daily Nigeria Horn Newspaper, High Chief Bright Chimezie Njoku has urged contesting candidates not to adopt conventional election method thereby creating room for a rancorous atmosphere while conducting the exercise .

High Chief Njoku gave this charge when Comr. Dorathy Nnaji, alongside her team, visited Horn Newspaper Chapel, at Mmadumere Street, Owerri, the state’s capital, today, advising them to ensure a credible, free and fair election devoid of catastrophe.

The renowned publisher who bemoaned the current disarrayed state of the parent body, Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ), in the State, pleaded with Team Dorathy to dutifully restore normalcy in the parent body, if elected into office.

Bright Chimezie described the upcoming election which is slated for May 20, 2021, as a golden opportunity for the in-coming chairman of NAWOJ to reunite journalists in the State, thus eradicating the extant animosity among practitioners, which he pointed out had deterred the latter from making notable progress, as he implored all journalists to make intercessions for the restoration of peace and harmony in the Union.

“Imo NUJ is in disarray. Urged everyone to go on their knees for God’s intervention. I feel pained by the the rate of animosity among journalists and I am calling on this team to make reuniting the NAWOJ and NUJ in general, your priority if elected into office. It is true that people still accord respect to the people the rate of rancour is regrettable.

Continuing, he said; “I see this as a very wonderful opportunity for you people to ride on; Don’t make the election like one of those circular elections wherein ballot papers will be carried away. No, it has to be credible, free and fair. Do not see anyone as your problem; desire to work in synergy with all and sundry to get back NUJ. NAWOJ should be the mother, so this should be a better opportunity to rebuild NUJ. Remember, you are the mother. And to the various contestants, I wish you all well”, he added.

Speaking further, he enjoined the contestants to ensure a synergy between the Association and the government of the day, reiterating that,
“you don’t fight Governmemt, but you must endeavour to tell govt the truth. So, you must work in collaboration with government. This is because you cannot succeed with any plan to fight the government.

Also, used the medium to commend Chief Chris Akaronye, the state’s Chairman of NUJ for the role he played in the recent crisis that struck vendors in the State, hence ensuring their immediate release from the police custody.

Responding, Comr. Nnaji, Chairmanship candidate and leader of the team assured members of the Association in the state of her readiness and willingness to restore the long lost dignity of the noble profession particularly among the women in the state.

Comr. Nnaji who was the immediate past Vice Chairman of NAWOJ pledged to offer effective representation, while vowing to adopt an inclusive leadership system, if elected.

She outlined some possible measures through which she could elevate the profession, ranging from training and retraining of females colleagues within and outside the Nigeria, skill acquisition programmes, among others.

“If you trust me, you’ll trust my team; if you believe in me, you’ll believe in my team and we assure you that we will not fail you”, she assured.

Corroborating, Comr. Zeph Onyirima, Horn chapel chairman enjoined Chairmanship Candidate her to work assiduously towards winning alongside her team, while urging her to focus her attention mainly on reuniting the NAWOJ in the State.

He described Horn as one of the greatest chapels in Imo, as he assured the team of their unalloyed support.

Meanwhile, contestants present at the meeting included China Ebiri for Secretary Vivian Iwu for Vice Chairman.
